Welcome to Trieste, the main seaport in the northern Italy.

It is located in the most northern part of Adriatic between Slovenia and Croatia at the endo of Trieste gulf. In the region of Trieste. Because of its location it was and still is strongly influenced by Slavic, Latin and German culture. It is one of the oldest parts of Habsburg monarchy which lasted from 1382 untill 1918. Between 1867 and 1918 Trieste was under the Austro- Hungarian empire which was 2nd biggest country in Europe after Russia.

It served as the main port for the monarchy so after Vienna (the capital) Trieste was 2nd most important city trough which most of the goods from abroad entere the monarchy. Because its prosperous economy the city was 4th biggest city in the monarchy (Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Trieste).

Because of its strategit location the city was of important strategic interest in a struggle between Eastern and Western block after the 2nd world war.

The main hypotessis of the name of Trieste is that id derived from an old Venetian word “terg” whichc means “market”. Same word is mostly used in Slavic language to describe old sity market.

Most of the city with approx 210.000 residents and around 400.000 in its metropolitan area live in the city and its surrounding hills that are at the end of Carst Plateau and rise up to 450 m ( 1500 feet) above sea level.

The climate in Trieste is considered humid subtropical climate. But the humid level is actually very friendly as it almost never exceeds 65%.

The temperature and climate depends stongly of distance from the sea.

Winter temperature almost never reaches 0 (freezing) and only between 0 and 2 days a year there is snow in Trieste.

In the summer temperature will rarelly exceed 25 or 30 degrees celsious or 75 fahrenheit. The wind Bora is very common in the region of Trieste and the combination of its temperature, strenght, humid and the lenght of time lasting makes the perfect natural condition to make the best proscioutto in Europe.

The main impact to Trieste culture and architecture had the Austrians at the time of Austo- Hungarian Empire so the city is also called Little Vienna.

At the times of 1 and 2nd world war the number of Slavic residents was more than 50% in compare to Italian and German.

As the fashist political system wanted to Italinize the region a lot of agressive actions were done in term of burning and destroying properties owned by Slavic and German nationality residents so alot of them moved away and a lot of native italians moved in from the other parts of Italy.

Before the rule of fashists Trieste was one of the most developed cities in Europe but after the arrival of fashist system this prosperity declined.

In 1930 fashist regime tried to re-establish the economy of the city so Italy made hige investments into the port fascilities.

But at the end of 2nd world war western allies destoyed most of it by the bombings which resulted in another decline in its economy.

Nowdays Trieste is a modern city with approx 210.000 residents.

Because most it was tax free zone uder Austrian rule even nowdays there are several big companies headquarters located in Trieste. Generaly and Allianz insurance companies are one of them.

City as also called “the coffe capital of italy” because of its long lasting history of imoprting coffee to most of the European countries.

Because of Trieste`s great geographical location this city is the best starting point to most of local Italian and Slovenia`s main attractions.

Most of interesting locations are easily reached in a rather short time.

Within a foowalk or a short (10min) taxi ride you can easily reach most of important historical and cultural objects such as:
